Just in case that you need me to introduce, this is Guinness Stout. In chinese, we call it Hei Pi Jiu (Black beer). It's stout, which is black in color. It's totally different from the beer that is going to be talked about later. I tried it once, and i think it tasted... Yucky!!!
In this season of Christmas, in the month of December, there will be a lot a lot of different ways of celebration of Christmas. And in order to attract consumers, the advertising companies got real busy to get their clients' products to be more in-the-customers-focus-area.
Before i do any comparisons, Let's identify the players:
1) Anchor Beer
2) Carlsberg
3) Heineken
4) Tiger Beer
5) Tsingdao Beer
Let's start:
This year, the TV advert started in August this year. I'll illustrate the storyline as below:
*****
1) Man rushes for the train, but he missed the train
2) There was a change of scene where the grey color train moves, and a green "heineken" cabin came into place.
3) Man enters the cabin, and saw his friends sitting and drinking beer (heineken)
4) Man joins the group of friends... then train stops
5) It was at a soccer match, and they were watching the match. They were chatting when a soccer-ball flew and hit the window of the cabin, and they went "Wooooohh..."
****
If i'm not wrong, Heineken is one sponsor for the Worldcup?
But well, no pun intended, but i think what this advert wants to say is that, you have drink Heineken to enjoy the Worldcup matches with your friends.
Personally, i haven't tasted Heineken before, but its image looks friendly. People tend to drink when they are out clubbing, which is a friend-making activity, which explains the friendliness.
Personal rating: 6.5 out of 10
Anchor Beer
I remembered that when my grumps (mummy's daddy) was still alive, he likes to drink this beer. And i guess when i go visit my grandparents, this is one brand and the only brand of beer that i saw at their house during chinese new year.
I got a few sips of this beer when i was young. I think this beer is not as strong tasting as others, but it's real bitter.
I don't remember Anchor to have any commercials to promote its beer. Could it be due to Singaporean taste? I can't judge, because i'm only 1 out of 4million people who think that is the reason.
Personal rating : 4.5 out of 10
Tiger Beer
This is one beer that i think i do drink quite often. Simply because:
a) Their ads
b) It's made in Singapore (erm... that's what i know)
c) We know the gender of the tiger (haha... read the joke below)
There was a time where someone asked me
A: Guess!! What's the gender of the Tiger in the Tiger beer.
me: Eh.....
A: Guess lah!!
me: Male
A: Correct!! Why
me: Because it's not called Tigress Beer?!?!
*******
Personally, i think among the many beers that i have tasted, Tiger is the nicest tasting (Note: Tiger has not endorsed me to say that, remember this is out of my most honest opinion, and i'm no beer drinker, i have no beer-belly!!) as it's not like very bitter like other beers do. And it's quite refreshing, i must say.
But what kept me glued on the TV set is the commercial it has.... and it's has kept me to suspense on their series of commercials, though until now it doesn't really make much sense with relation to the beer.
Set 1 of (i-dunno-how-many-sets)
a) There was a group of people, including a woman talking. The men got this woman, called Marlena to get close to a man for he knows the secret of the tiger. He has a tattoo of a tiger on his arm.
Set 2 of (i-dunno-how-many-sets)
a) It was years later after Set 1A.
b) Marlena was in a conversation with the men
Men: It's time that you get the secret of the tiger.
Marlena: Yes, i will get it
c) Marlena goes home to be with the man. The man was dying, and laying in bed. A young waiter came out of the man's room after serving him the beer and left.
Marlena went and sat at the bedside, stroking the tattoo of the tiger on his arm.
Marlena: Honey, is there something that you want to tell me?
(There was a long pause)
Man: I forgive you (and he died)
Marlena started to scream, saw a plaque with the tiger embalm, and threw it at the mirror, smashing it..... the waiter was shown running away, revealing a tiger tattoo on his arm.
*****
This is an exciting advertisement to me. Man, i can't wait to know what's the next scene, which i saw already, but just can't relate to it. At the last part of the advert, there's a "To be continued...." It's very exciting to know what's the next coming scene.
Personal rating: 8.5 out of 10Carlsberg
Since last year, there was a few Mediacorp variety shows which Carlsberg was the sponsor. This year it's the Carlsberg world of Friends. Adverts includes celebrities such as Tay Ping Hui and Michelle Chong.
It seems like Carlsberg is really aggressively trying to win a pie in the Singapore market, just like Heineken. And it seems to be doing better than the latter, being endorsed by local known celebrities.
On a personal note, my perception of the Carlsberg beer is that its much more 'ang moh' beer as compared to Heineken. I have never tasted Carlsberg before, so hopefully there will be a chance to.
Personal rating: 7.5 out of 10
To many people, this is one beer that is considered the Chinese beer. Hmmm.. i do not know why, but to me, it's because:
a) It's made in China (Tsingdao happens to be a place in China)
b) It has a Chinese name (duh..)
This beer is not commonly sold at Kopi-tiams, but it's easily found in places such as supermarkets, and even small neighborhood shops. But i guess it's not a very happening brand, as the last time i remembered watching it's commercial on tv was .... eons? ago. I don't think i wanna taste it though. But it's more prominent on print ads such as Chinese newspapers.
Personal rating: 3 out of 10
Writer's note: i must re-emphasize, the ratings that i give is based, yet again, on my own perception. Just in case the advertisers for the various brands mentioned chanced upon my humble blog. Well, kudos for good work, and gambatte ne for those that fall short. :)
