Dogs are faithful companions

I dunno about u, but i'm a firm dog lover. I firmly believe that Dogs are really man's bestest friend. They may sometimes bite the hand that feeds them, or bark the voice that coos them. But dogs are faithful, which is one trait that i strongly believe that as humans, we should also learn from it.

My heart melted - literally, after reading
this article about how a dog chased after its new found friend and owner across countries. If this article doesn't touch your heart, nothing will.

Stray who wins soldier's heart is flown to US from war zone: Iraqi dog runs 100km in search of US Marine
February 28, 2008

WITH a wag of its tail and a colourful US Marines bandanna around its neck, this dog bounded into the San Deigo's Lindbergh Field airport on Friday, oblivious to the reporters and cameras present there.

US Marine Corps Captain Eric Sjoberg and his wife walk Nubs out of the San Diego airport. The couple will take care of it until Major Dennis returns from Iraq.

The clean environs of the airport were a far cry from the time when it lived in war-torn Iraq and fed on scraps.

US Marine Major Brian Dennis, 36, spotted this German shepherd-border collie mix last October.

Major Dennis was part of the military team building infrastructure along the Syria-Iraq border and training Iraqi forces.

He spotted the grey and white dog in Iraq's Anbar province while he was on patrol duty and named it Nubs after learning that someone cut the ears off believing it would make the dog more aggressive and alert.

Within weeks, Nubs was greeting Major Dennis during routine patrol stops along border communities. The Marines fed him bits of their food and by November, Major Dennis and his unit were keeping an eye out for the dog, which routinely chased their Humvees when they departed.

Life on the run, however, was taking a toll on the canine, who had lost a tooth and been bitten in the neck.

In late December, Major Dennis found Nubs almost frozen to death in the freezing temperatures. The canine had also been stabbed with a screwdriver.

Major Dennis rubbed antibiotic cream on the wound and slept with Nubs to keep him warm.

In a letter to his family in the US, he wrote: 'I really expected he would be dead. Somehow he made it through the night.'

In January this year, Major Dennis had to leave Nubs behind as he was not allowed to take it along with him when his unit was ordered back to the command post 104km away.

Nubs chased after the Marines Humvee as they departed.

Major Dennis thought that that was the last they had seen of the dog. But two days later, he and a colleague saw Nubs staring back at them.

The Major wrote in a letter: 'Somehow that crazy damned dog tracked us.'

But the reunion was short lived. US military policy prohibits having pets in war zones, and the major was given four days to get the dog off the base or kill him.

The decision was easy: Nubs was going to San Diego.

ARRANGEMENTS
With help from his Iraqi interpreter, Major Dennis managed to find a Jordanian veterinarian to get the care and paperwork needed to get the dog to the US. He also negotiated the red tape to get Nubs across the border into Jordan.

In an e-mail to his friends and family, Major Dennis wrote: 'This dog who had been through a lifetime of fighting, war, abuse... is going to live the good life.'

According to Major Dennis' mother Mrs Marsha Cargo, their family and close friends helped raise the $3,500 ($4,900) needed to get the dog from Amman, Jordan, to San Diego.

'I just can't believe it. Out there in the middle of nowhere these two find each other,' she said.

A colleague in San Diego agreed to care for the dog and have it trained until Major Dennis returns in March from Iraq.

For now, though, Nubs is finally safe - and waiting for his master to follow him.

New Online shopping outlet

As u all know, there's been quite a bit of online shopping options available where many online companies sprout up to get a share of the online shoppers pie.

Like,
Mocca, and eBay and many others.

Today i would like to recommend an online store that is selling youthful products such as Skinny jeans and youngsters' favorite clothings and latest fashion in watches.

You may say: You can look for such at places such as Far East Plaza and Bugis. However, to get the same item, at a better rate, why not?

Interested yet? Well, as this is an online store after all, there will be consistent updates on the website to bring the latest and bestest fashion goods and accessories to cater to the needs of the masses.

Besides, being in Singapore, delivery is readily available as long as u can plan the meeting time along with the shop owner.

So, do visit the lovely shopkeeper at
http://simplyjust-shop.blogspot.com

Their prices are really competitive. You have to see it to believe it.

Enjoy shopping!! =)

Salary survey 2008

Today i had my (long overdued) FY07 Salary review with boss today.

It has been fruitful, and boss gave positive comments and areas which i have to work on, which is really fantastic.

Though there was some parts that could not lead to the completion, as apparently i filled the wrong form for that part, but looking forward to completing that.

At the very least, for the first part, i've some improvement, at a score of 3.16. Well, at least i have about three 4s, and about four 2.75's. (2.75 means it's not really achieve that yet, so need to gambatte gambatte).

Next week, i need to schedule for final salary review for everyone, so earth9-ers, look out for it, if u are reading this (which i doubt it).

Anyway, to prep everyone, i've searched out an article that shows the salary survey for this year, which is a shocking average at
5% increment.

I myself got a shock when i saw it. 5% means a miserly $90 increment if it applies to me (wha lao, really worst than peanuts, why i think it's around the size of a mustard seed). Man! the govt should be more generous with their estimation la.

This is how a handful of mustard seeds look like. So imagine 1 mustard seed.

VERY, Very, Very SMALL! How many mustard seeds will make a peanut?

I read someone's blog, where she was pissed at getting a 3% increment, after a year's hard work, putting in weekends and extra hours. Morale fell to a new low.

What i can say is, the person's company is super giam-siap. They want to close shop already since they are pissing ppl and inviting them to 跳槽.

I doubt coy will fall under this category, but then, prep for it, because there may be a probability that the increment may not be as fantastic as estimated.

i have to temporarily say adios to my targetted $300 increment. =( (based on that salary survey,i think i will really umchio if i can get $200 increment). i'm still having faith, as small as a mustard seed, that a miracle can happen.

Do S'pore women expect too much?

There's an interesting article that popped out on today's Straits Times on the Lifestyle section.

The title read as the title on my blog: Do Singapore Women Expect Too Much?

Now, as a woman in Singapore, i think i need to stand up and defend my female kind. I think generically it's not just about women in Singapore, but as a woman as a whole.

I can tell u what i (and prob all ladies, please get ready to say "Amen") expect my date to do (and if u are male and u happen to be my future date, TAKE HEED! Haha):
1) Open the car doors for the ladies.
2) Foot the bill on the first date (but i think i'm fine as an independent lady to go dutch, but it shows u hasn't gone through manhood 101)
3) Send the missus home after the first date. (and every other one, even if u don't drive)

Simple right?

I mean, i'm not asking for the moon right? I don't expect them to say that i'm the prettiest and bla bla bla and dunno what, because that will be lying. I think these 3 simple requirements on a first day is very simple.

Anyway, according to this report, ladies also expect men to carry their handbags for them.

Which i think, it's nothing wrong at all. I mean, i don't expect men to do that for me, but if i carry a very heavy bag, i think it's a really sweet gesture. And i see the couples in Church, the men will carry their girlfriend's bag, be it a light or heavy bag.

So because of this, the men in Singapore feel that we women are pampered? It should be a SOP ok. Man, i can't imagine it la, when i carry a lot of things, and walking around, and there are a few men that are just staring at me carrying them and don't even move their arses to help. I think, they are not men. They are only male by birth, whether if they are men by choice, i leave it to them la.

Ok, enough of males, let's see the statistics on this Social Development Service Survey on dating traits (took it from page L3 of straits Times, Feb 24,2008):

  • 80% of women expect their boyfriends to pay on dates and 92% of men do (whatever where the 8% of males doing?)

  • 50% of women expect men to open the doors to cars and restaurants and 88% of men will do so (let me guess; these 12% males think that the ladies should serve them, is that the MCP mindset at work??)

  • 90% of women expect men to send their girlfriends home after a date and 94% of men will do so.

  • 96% of women expect their boyfriends to initiate their celebration of special occasions such as anniversaries and birthdays and 92% of men will do so. (U can give without loving, but u cannot love without giving - and i think usually girls will be more sensitive about dates of special occasion. Men, it's a chance for u to score points, no doubt!)

  • 88% of women expect their boyfriends to dress up for special occasions such as Valentine's Day and birthdays, while 78% of men will do so. (Males; imagine if you want to bring out your girlfriend to meet your friends, and she dresses nominally, u will feel pissed, isnt it? So do only your gf what u want her to do to you)

  • 24% of women expect their boyfriends to carry their handbags and 70% of men will do so.

In summary, according to this report, Singaporean ladies' expectation of men are as below:
1) Celebrate special occasions such as birthdays, first date, first introduction etc etc etc.. (yeah we ladies are just so particular about dates, it's inbuilt)
2) Send their girlfriends home (to their doorstep) after every date.
3) Dress well for special occasions (which i foresee the ladies in turn will do so too)
4) Pay for expenditures accumulated during dates.
5) Open doors of cars and restaurants for the missus
6) Carry their girlfriend's handbags for them.

I think, these are really, the minimal requirements. The men can do more than that, if they want to.

We aren't expecting very much, but it will be so good if Singapore men are a bit more caring and sensitive.

SINGAPORE 2010

Today is a day where it blew excitement in the air for every Singaporean citizen.

Ever since being shortlisted for the final 2 cities to Host the Youth Olympic Games, alongside with Moscow, no one has been slacking. And we have been anticipating.

Tension in the air arose from 3pm onwards at Padang, with students and ministers, cheering and getting ready for the final result that is to come. ~ Don't get me wrong. I'm a good employee, i stayed in the office~

6pm. The tension increases. Students became a bit uneasy, probably due to the heat, and being sunbaked.

The whole Padang was a sea of red, where if u are not wearing red, u betta steer clear. If u get caught by the camera, u be so significant because u are so easily seen.

*****

I was in the gym, got prepared real quickly, and went to the nearest cycling machine and facing the TV, with my phone radio on.

7pm. All the various channels are still playing songs, the TVs are showing the various dramas. The tension in the gym was kinda nervous too, with many ppl in front of the Tv screens and working out.

From 7pm till 7.15pm, everyone was sweating, and those who were on headphones, half of them were probably waiting for the result too.

Then, CNA suddenly did a double screen, LIVE from Padang on the left and IOC Committee spokesman on the right LIVE. And the Channel TV Screen switched to the LIVE Screen from IOC.

And, we saw the result.

The guy held a result slip that he flipped, which read:

Singapore 2010

On the TV Screen, u see people dressed in red, cheering and hugging one another. In the gym, there was clapping. Wow.

It's really wonderful that we got it. Small doesn't mean that we can host big events. It's going to be a historical event for Singapore.

Singapore ecstatic at winning Youth Olympics bid

SINGAPORE - Singapore erupted in celebration on Thursday after winning the right to host the inaugural Youth Olympics in 2010, with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong calling it a new era for Southeast Asian sport.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) awarded the Games to the city-state ahead of Moscow by a vote of 53 to 44. It will be the first time that Singapore is hosting a multi-disciplinary sporting event of such a magnitude.

"Friends and fellow Singaporeans, congratulations to all of us," said Mr Lee in front of thousands of cheering supporters wearing red and white, the colours of the national flag.

"It is a great honour and privilege for all of us. It will be the first time that the Olympic flame will be in Southeast Asia and in Singapore.

"We will be the focus of a new era for sporting development for Southeast Asia and Singapore. We worked very hard, it was a national effort, but more than that it was a people effort."

Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth, and Sports, called it "an historic day".

"By choosing Singapore, the IOC has declared that it is possible for small young cities like Singapore to host the Olympic movement," he said.

"On Friday, the hard work begins. I know we will succeed because every Singaporean will go all out to welcome the youth of the world to Singapore in 2010."

Moscow had Russian President Vladimir Putin in its corner, far deeper pockets than Singapore in terms of budget, and long-standing ties with the IOC on its side. But Singapore played its size-is-not-everything card to perfection.

A huge buzz has been generated among Singaporeans, with people from all backgrounds in the nation of 4.5 million people supporting the bid.

Online, they have shown their backing by blogging, chatting on forums, posting videos and setting up websites. And more than 550 companies publicly backed the bid.

The brainchild of IOC chief Jacques Rogge, the Youth Olympics will feature traditional sports such as athletics and swimming, and also some innovative events such as beach-wrestling and BMX bike riding.

Rogge made the announcement himself from the IOC headquarters in Lausanne, ending a process that originally started with nine cities in contention. This was whittled down to Athens, Bangkok, Turin, Singapore and Moscow before it became a two-horse race.

"This is a key moment for the Olympic movement," said Rogge. "Singapore has put together a very exciting project. Hosting the Youth Olympic Games for the first time is a great responsibility, and I have every confidence in the team in Singapore.

"I have no doubt that their professionalism and enthusiasm will be instrumental in the staging of a successful Youth Olympic Games in 2010."
The Games will see 3,500 athletes, aged between 14 and 18, competing in 26 sports.

Singapore is proposing 24 venues, with four being built as temporary facilities, including one large cluster of 13 facilities in its Marina-Kallang area.

The Youth Olympic Village will be located at a new multi-million-dollar student residential complex at the National University of Singapore, slated for completion months before the event.

Singapore is budgeting US$75.5 million to run the Olympics, covering everything from educational and cultural programmes to development of services and transport. The Games will run from August 14-16.

*****
Before i end this entry, i found a wonderful video on how Singaporeans support the bid, and i think it's wonderful, where it brought out the real spirit of the whole Olympics. Go go go Singapore!!

What is your choice?

It's not really about decision making.

It's really about what u really like. =)

Guys, Viewers' Choice is back again!! It's a time where you get to vote on your favorite ad, which u have seen through 2007.

Last year there were a few ads that i really really like, but it wasn't brought to fruitation. But this year, being more knowledgeable, i can really show what's my choice of favorite ads. I mean, C'mon la, i take the bus like everyday, and also get entertained by TV Mobile when i'm not immersed in my PSP. I definitely watch a lot of TV ads.

Top 3 favorite local ads

S9: All-in-one Digital Video Recorder/StarHub

This is my first choice. I seriously think that this commercial really brings the correct message across on what it wants to do; Watch, Surf, Talk. And... that lady's irritated-'huh'-shock-faint expression, is priceless!! Hahahaha....

S4: M1 Suntalk Plus Launch Campaign

In case if anyone didn't remember this commercial, M1 was promoting Free IDD calls to 15 countries. And it's a cute way la. Though i dunno if Singaporeans will wait for Oily butter chicken which arrived in a parcel 3 days later.... lol

This commercial stood out as when the fella say: "Deliver everywhere, no area restrictions", and end up he says : "Mumbai ah, India". I guess calling for free to 'ji siao' people, and seeing their expressions, is yet again, priceless.

S7: Anything/Whatever

This is one commercial that is, in 1 word: Crappy

I dunno about u, but i've never tried 'Anything' because it's carbonated. I tried 'Whatever' though. Buying a can, is like a gamble, u either get the Lemon Tea flavor or something else. Seriously, i think, its print ads are much better. But well, it's an interesting commercial as compared to the rest.

[Taken from http://gemssty.com/category/ads/page/2/]

i don't plagarize ok. But this is one good picture that shows how much more interesting the Bus ads are.

And, up till now, i still don't really like Anything/Whatever.

2 Commercials that i thought should be nominated

1) Mocca.com [Selling Car]

This is the first TVC that came with the launch of Mocca.com, and what i think is; it's the best among the 3. As they say, the first one is more often than not, the best one. It's corny to a right level that makes ppl go -_-"', but not crappy like the "I'm selling my house". This is what i call an appropriate and eye-catching ad.

2) Singtel - MIO Box

If i'm not wrong, this is the first commercial to introduce MIO....Good concept to show that one box enables one to surf internet, fixed line and internet line, with talking modem (MIO), talking Handphone, TV, Phone set. Easily understood, even without much explanation.

Note: This is not an advert. I just like to comment on my favorite ads. That's all. =)

Goodbye Ah Meng

Singapore mourns the loss of the country's favorite Orang Utan, Ah Meng.

Ah Meng died on 大年初二 in the morning at the Singapore Zoological Gardens, and will be laid to rest tomorrow.

When i was in Primary 4, i remembered going to the Zoo with my family members, and we took a photo with Ah Meng, with my auntie and me. Well, that time what i remembered was being afraid, though i was born in the year of the monkey. But well, now i appreciate this favorite orang utan as a notable icon of Singapore greatly missed. Hope her children/grandchildren will continue to do what she has left off.

You can read the article

S'pore favourite Orang Utan, Ah Meng dies

THE Singapore Zoo's most famous and well-loved Orang Utan, Ah Meng has passed away on Friday due to old age. She was approximately 50 years old.

She was born in Sumatra, Indonesia around 1960 and came to Zoo when she was about seven years old.

In 1982, Ah Meng's big break came when she became the star attraction of the Zoo's 'Breakfast with an Orang Utan' programme.

The loveable Orang Utan rose to fame quickly, and has been featured in numerous travel films and print articles.

In 1992, Ah Meng became the first and only non-human recipient of the Singapore Toursim Promotion Board's (STB) Special Ambassador award for her contributions.

In her lifetime, Ah Meng has also rubbed shoulders with foreign dignitaries and famous celebrities including Prince Philip and Michael Jackson.

The Zoo's curator, Mr Alagappasamy or Sam has taken care of Ah Meng since she first came to the Zoo is extremely saddened by her departure and though it may 'take a long time' for him to adjust not having her around, he is 'very happy to have had the opportunity to take care of Ah Meng and her family all these years'.

Group CEO of Wildlife Reserves Singapore, Ms Fanny Lai said: 'We mourn the passing of Ah Meng. She has touched the hearts of everyone who has met her and contributed immensely in helping promote awareness of how each and every one of us can play a role in anti-poaching, anti-deforestation and conservation matters'.

Ah Meng leaves behind two sons Hsing Hsing, Satria, and two daughers, Medan and Sayang and six grandchildren.

She will be reposed at the Zoo's Garden with a View from 9-11am on Feb 10 where the public can visit her for the last time. Her memorial service will take place shortly after at 11am.
